I recommend adding a solid backer plate, which I did using a sheet of aluminum cut and drilled to match the plate profile. Much stiffer and more resistant to vibration now. Unfortunately, the LEDs to illuminate the license plate crapped out somewhere on my 7500km Continental Divide ride this summer, and I couldn't repair the little circuit board they sat on because of corrosion. Ended up making a new circuit board with new LEDs which I'll post at some point. I hesitated on the idea that it was no longer needed, and your blog confirmed to me that it is combined in the new tail light kit.
